Question about using do_install:append in some recipes

Hi all!

I would like to ask about the do_install:append present in some recipes.

do_install:append () {

In my case, when adapting them on a .bbappend, I had to remove the :append because I wanted to redefine the do_install. I wanted to do it specifically because I want to have the Data dir inside ${sysconfdir} instead of ${localstatedir}.

So, my question is: is the :append really needed in these do_install?
