Oboists have suffered with reeds since the dawn of times. Things have become better with the invention of machines to minimize our struggle, but it's stille the Achilles heel for the most of us.

Having this in mind, we wrote a list of reed making tips to ease your burden.

Reed making is part of the study of oboe

In order to progress, reed making should be as important as any other activity of your daily study sessions. A good reed will make your life easier, and that's why you should always be improving your reed making skills.

A sharp knife is essential

We will leave this one to Lian Wang, former principal oboist of the New York Phillarmonic

"To make a good oboe reed, first, it’s a sharp knife, second it’s a sharp knife and third it’s a sharp knife. Therefore I’m extremely conscientious with how sharp my knife is. Usually if I do have a sharp knife I know the reed is probably going to be okay."

Have a zen mind

Never make reeds when you are tired, angry, anxious or any other state of mind that won't let you concentrate. Concentration is the most important element while making reeds to avoid scraping too much and to help you do a beautiful scrape.
