It's too bad that right-clicking (or two-finger clicking, or Ctrl-clicking) on an unselected item on the Mac opens the context menu briefly and then closes it when the selection changes. I'll file that as a separate issue.

In the meantime, this fixes the bug described. Merging.

@gruehle That bug is already filed as #1910. I'm going to bump it to medium priority since a number of people have run into it.
