An invite only room usually has guest access enabled (partly because Riot does this on purpose), and this confuses people. It is perceived that guests can come in without an invite, when in reality they need an invite

Nobody knows what guest accounts are (Riot doesn’t make it clear that guest is a type of account). Why not just totally kill them in riot and remove all those options?

We haven't killed them because other clients do use them, and they are part of the protocol. Ideally we'd make them not suck and be better at explaining them.
