The previous PR #359 was rolled back since the button "Squash and Merge" was accidentally pressed so it lead to loosing the links to the addressed issues.
This merge contains the following set of improvements and fixes:
It was decided to increase the major version of the release since the changes made under #357 are not backward compatible.
